Calling Costa Rica
To call Costa Rica from North America, dial 011, then 506, then the number. Costa Rican telephone numbers have 8 digits after the country code (506). Costa Rica is small enough that there are no area codes within the country.
If you come across a website that only shows a 7-digit phone number, it means it has not been updated since the change to 8 digits in April 2008. To see if you can get through by phone, try converting the 7-digit number to 8 digits, by putting a 2 at the beginning of the number. This will work if the number is a landline.
Cell phone numbers in Costa Rica begin with 8 or 3, and can be updated by adding an 8 at the beginning of the number.
