Day 1 : Your guide will meet you at the airport and take you to Nacientes Palmichal, a small chalet-style lodge in the mountains, about 75 minutes south of the airport. The lodge and the community of Palmichal protect the water supply for 40,000 residents in the towns below them. You'll be greeted with a tropical drink and learn about this grassroots conservaion community.

Day 2 : Your ACTUAR guide will take you hiking along the rushing Tabarcia River where you'll be surrounded by many species of beautiful butterflies. Have lunch and a tortilla-making lesson at Don Manuel’s farm. In the afternoon, visit a small coffee farm and see how a very special coffee is grown and processed. There will be a cultural presentation in the evening.

AppleMark Day 3 : After a hearty breakfast, your guide will drive you down through the Central Valley on your way to Arenal Volcano. In Zarcero, you'll stop in front of the charming church and stroll through the topiary gardens, shaped into monkeys, elephants, dancing bears, pre-Columbian figures, etc. You will stop for lunch at a typical restaurant along the way, and arrive at the volcano in the late afternoon.    

Day 4 : Enjoy the beautiful view of the volcano and the lake. You are in the right position to see the lava flow, which is especially impressive at night when the weather is clear. Go for a hike at Arenal Hanging Bridges, where you can walk at canopy level in gorgeous rainforest. In the evening you will enjoy a delicious dinner and a relaxing soak in Ecotermales Hot Springs, then return to your hotel for another night of volcano viewing. 

Day 5 : Take a relaxing float down the Peñas Blancas river to see monkeys and sloths (optional).  Do the nearby Costa Rica Sky Adventure Canopy tour, then relax, enjoying the volcano, lake and pool. 

Day 6 : Your guide will take you to the town of San Ramón and then down the coast. Stop for lunch and to see the crocodiles at the Tarcoles bridge. You will arrive at Los Campesinos Reserve in the late afternoon, in time to enjoy a tasty campesino dinner. 

Day 7 :  Learn the uses of rainforest plants, trees and flowers in a hike at Los Campesinos Reserve. In the afternoon, cross the suspended bridge next to the 175-foot waterfall and swim in an idyllic waterfall pool. 

Day 8: After a hearty breakfast, set off for La Cusinga Lodge, about three hours south. Visit beautiful Playa del Arco or hike on the trails to see monkeys. sloths, birds and frogs. 

Day 9 : Enjoy the pristine beach, panoramic views and rainforest trails at La Cusinga.

Day 10 : After lunch, head into the mountains and stay in a cozy lodge with lush forest views.

Day 11: Get up early to search for the legendary resplendent quetzal, the sacred bird of the Maya. After a relaxed breakfast, hike in the billowing oak forests of this prisine area. In the afternoon, your guide will drive you back to San José.

Day 12 : Fly home with happy memories of your time in Costa Rica.

 

9-day tour (same as above but without the volcano:

RAINFOREST, WATERFALL POOLS, WILDLIFE, BIRDS. COFFEE, BEACHES, CULTURE!

Day 1 : Your bilingual naturalist guide will meet your flight, and take you to Nacientes Palmichal, a small chalet-style lodge in the mountains, about 75 minutes south of the airport. Palmichal's cloud forest reserve protects the water supply for 40,000 residents in the towns below them. You will learn about their conservation efforts and enjoy a delicious country-style dinner.

 

Day 2 : Your guide will take you hiking along the rushing Tabarcia River where you'll be surrounded by many species of beautiful butterflies. Then visit Don Manuel’s farm for a delicious native lunch and a tortilla-making lesson. Later, you’ll see how very special coffee is grown and processed.

 

Day 3 :  After breakfast, your guide will take you down to the coast, where you will stop at Carara National Park to see scarlet macaws and crocodiles. You will arrive at Los Campesinos Reserve in the late afternoon. 

 

Day 4 :  Learn the uses of all the plants and flowers in the forest from your campesino guides in a hike at Los  Campesinos Rainforest Reserve. At one point you will zip across a gorge in an andarivel, the campesino form of rapid transit. You'll continue up to the lookout point where you can see the beaches south of Manuel Antonio National Park.  In the afternoon, cross the suspension bridge next to the 175-foot waterfall and swim in the lovely waterfall pool. 

 

Day 5 :  AppleMark After breakfast, your guide will take you to La Cusinga Lodge, to the south. La Cusinga's unique architecture makes the most of natural materials. All cabins have panoramic views of the sea and of Isla Ballena. Pristine Playa del Arco is a 20-minute walk through the rainforest, This gorgeous beach is part of Ballena National Marine Park and is protected by Isla Ballena, giving it a gentler surf than most Pacific beaches.  

Day 6 :

Hike La Cusinga's trails to see monkeys. sloths, birds and frogs, and ancient rainforest trees. 

Day 7 :

Take a snorkeling tour to Isla Ballena in the morning. You might see a baby whale! In the afternoon, your guide will take you into the mountains near Cerro de la Muerte, Soon you will arrive at the charming lodge in Copey de Dota, about three hours northeast of La Cusinga.

Day 8 :

Get up early to go in search of the Resplendent Quetzal, the sacred bird of the Maya. The quetzal cannot live in captivity. It is only found in old-growth forests at high altitudes. It is an inspiring sight, with its long, graceful tail feathers, iridescent green plumage and red chest. Later, you’ll travel on scenic, winding back roads to return once again to Nacientes Palmichal for a Costa Rican goodbye party and serenade.

Day 9 : 

Your guide will deliver you to the airport two hours before your departure. Return home with many happy memories of Costa Rica.
